Dear Mayor Bloomberg,
As employers and members of the Partnership for New York City, we are writing to express our support for your administration’s plan to partner with one or more world class universities to establish a new Applied Sciences campus in the five boroughs. This may be the single most important investment the city could make to insure New York’s continued leadership in the global “innovation” economy, where new jobs and growth industries will increasingly be a product of applied scientific research and commercialization.
Deputy Mayor Robert K. Steel has described the Applied Sciences campus as a “game-changer” for New York, and he is right. It has the potential to accelerate the diversification of our economy in such growth sectors as advanced manufacturing, alternative energy, life sciences and big data. It also would be a magnet for the engineering and entrepreneurial talent that is needed to reinforce New York’s anchor industries in finance, professional services, media, fashion, and health.
It is truly exciting that so many great universities are competing for the opportunity to make a significant investment in New York and to establish here a new center of higher education, research and entrepreneurial activity. Whichever applicant is selected, the impact on the city and its economy will be large and transformative for decades to come. Congratulations on this initiative and thank you for your commitment to the future of New York.
